Who We Are

A Local Business, Not a Franchise

The Ginger Beard Repair Service is an independent appliance repair business, owned and run in Canberra. Tait started it in 2015 after a career in electrical repair, and the beard in the logo is his.

We work out of a base in Fyshwick and repair household appliances in people's homes across Canberra and the surrounding region — washing machines, dryers, dishwashers, fridges, ovens, cooktops and rangehoods. Portable appliances come to the workshop instead. When an appliance isn't worth repairing, we handle the replacement too.

Some of that work is booked directly by the person who owns the appliance. A good share arrives from manufacturers, warranty companies and property managers who need someone in Canberra to do it properly on their behalf. Either way it's our own technicians who attend — we don't subcontract the work out.

How We Work

Why We Do Things This Way

Most of what frustrates people about getting an appliance fixed isn't the repair. It's not knowing what it will cost, not knowing when someone is coming, and not knowing whether the advice they're given has something riding on it. Everything below is a decision we made about one of those, and each one is visible in how a job actually runs.

The prices are published, and the labour is capped

Our Service Call Fee, labour rate and discounts are on the website rather than quoted on the doorstep. Labour is capped at 2.5 hours per appliance regardless of how long the job takes, so a repair that turns difficult becomes our problem rather than your invoice. See Rates & Discounts.

Diagnose first, recommend second

We won't tell you what's wrong with an appliance before we've tested it, and we won't tell you it needs replacing to avoid a difficult repair. The first visit is used for whatever the appliance needs — working the fault out, or getting straight on with fixing it.

Nothing rides on the answer

GBRS doesn't sell appliances. When we say something is worth repairing, or isn't, there's no margin behind the advice. If replacement is the better call we'll say so, and we can carry out the changeover as a continuation of the same job.

You always know where we are

A confirmation when you book, a reminder the day before, a text when we're one job away, and live tracking on the way. Nobody should have to spend a morning waiting for a technician who might arrive at any point in a four-hour window.

We're still there after the invoice

Repairs carry a 12-month warranty on the parts and labour for that repair, and we follow up two weeks later to check the appliance is behaving. If something isn't right, replying to your invoice email reaches the people who did the work.

We say when a job isn't ours

A few repairs need a workshop bench, a gas licence or another trade entirely. We'd rather tell you that plainly than have a go at it. Where a diagnosis lands there, we charge the Service Call Fee only and leave the labour off.

The Team

Who Turns Up, and Who You'll Hear From

A small team, which is deliberate. The technician at your door works here, wears the uniform and will be the one who comes back if a part has to be fitted.

In the office

The part of the job that isn't holding a screwdriver — chasing parts, booking return visits, and making sure nobody is left wondering what's happening with their appliance.

Kathryn

Head of the Engine Room

Keeps the rest of us in check — following up on jobs in progress and making sure the documentation behind each one is complete.

Erwin

Parts & estimating

Sends enquiries out to our parts supplier network, orders the parts and prepares estimates, then gets back to you once the suppliers have come back to us.

Bookings

Takes bookings by phone and email, arranges return visits once parts arrive, and follows up on questions from customers.

Qualifications

Qualified — and Always Learning

Appliances stopped being simple machines a long time ago. A modern washing machine is a motor, a pump, a water system and a computer that argues with all three, so the people working on them need more than a parts catalogue.

Between the team

Electricians, engineers and electronics specialists

  • Degree-qualified engineers, including post-graduate
  • Electricians — which is why wired-in ovens and cooktops are ordinary work for us
  • Electronics specialists, for control boards and the parts of an appliance that think
  • Multiple Cert IV qualifications across the team

It's the reason a diagnosis usually ends with what has failed, rather than a list of parts to try.

Behind the team

Manufacturer training and a parts network

  • Authorised service agents for a range of brands, with regular manufacturer training
  • Direct access to manufacturers when an appliance needs it
  • More than 30 parts suppliers around the country
  • A Fyshwick workshop for bench-level work on portable appliances

Which brands sit where is set out under Brands We Repair.

We also carry public liability insurance, which is worth knowing if you're a property manager or an organisation sending us work.

More Than the Repair

Where a Job Can Go From Here

A repair is where most jobs start and finish. The rest of what we do exists because a repair doesn't always end there, and we'd rather carry the job on than hand you back a problem.

In-home repairs

The core of it — washing machines, dryers, dishwashers, fridges, ovens and cooktops and rangehoods.

Replacement

When repair isn't the answer, the changeover runs as one job rather than four phone calls. Appliance Replacement

Who We Work For

More Than Household Call-Outs

A large share of our work comes through organisations rather than directly from the person using the appliance. We're authorised service agents for a number of manufacturers, we carry out warranty work through national repair and warranty companies, and we take appliance jobs from property managers, landlords and other service providers.

That work runs the same process as any other job, with a few differences in who arranges it and who gets the invoice. Organisations sending regular work can be set up as account clients.

What Customers Say

Reviews We Don't Get to Write

Every completed GBRS job triggers a feedback request through ServiceM8, and this feed is what comes back. We don't write the reviews, pick which ones appear or take any down — the feed belongs to ServiceM8, and what it shows is up to them.

It's the same feed across every appliance type and every kind of work we do — repairs, replacements, inspections and workshop jobs.
