Dryer Problems We Can Help With

Find the one that sounds like your dryer. You don't need to know the cause — describing what it's doing is enough for us to bring the right parts and tools.

Not heating

The drum turns and the cycle runs, but the air coming out is cold and the load stays wet.

Taking far too long

A load that used to take one cycle now needs two or three, or comes out damp every time.

Drum not turning

You can hear it running but the drum sits still, or it only turns when it's empty.

Dead or won't start

No lights, no response when you press start, or it hums without going anywhere.

Stops mid-cycle

It shuts down partway through, sometimes restarting once it has cooled down.

Noisy or rumbling

Squealing, thumping, grinding or a rattle that has got steadily worse.

Running too hot

The cabinet or the load is hotter than it should be, or there's a hot, scorched smell. Stop using it and book it in.

Water not draining

On a condenser or heat pump dryer: the tank isn't filling, won't empty, or water appears on the floor.

Door won't latch

The door won't stay shut, pops open mid-cycle, or the dryer thinks it's open when it isn't.

Error code showing

A code or flashing light on the display. Tell us the code when you book — it helps us prepare.

Tripping the power

The safety switch or circuit breaker goes when you turn the dryer on or partway through a cycle.

Something else

Odd smells, marks on clothing, or behaviour you can't explain. Describe it and we'll take a look.

Not sure which one fits? Book the visit anyway — diagnosing the fault is what the first appointment is for.

Vented, condenser and heat pump dryers

Vented

Blows warm, moist air out of the back into the room or a duct. Simple, and the type where airflow problems show up most.

Condenser

Collects the moisture as water in a tank or pumps it to a drain. Adds a condensate pump and reservoir to the list of things we test.

Heat pump

A condenser dryer that recycles its own heat, so it's gentler and cheaper to run. Well worth repairing, and usually worth more than the repair costs.

How It Works

What Happens at the Visit

1

Book a time

Choose a slot online and save 10% on the Service Call Fee. Tell us the make, model, what the dryer is doing and how it's installed.

2

Know when we're coming

Confirmation email, a reminder the day before, a text when we're one job away, then live tracking on the way.

3

Diagnose the fault

The technician runs the dryer, works out what has failed and explains the cost before any repair work starts.

4

Repair or order parts

Many dryer faults are finished on the spot. If a part is needed we order it and book a return visit — no second Service Call Fee.

5

Test and follow up

We run our dryer checks before closing the job, then follow up two weeks later to confirm all is well.

What we check before we call it finished

  • General check of the cabinet and drum for rust
  • The dryer turns under load, not just empty
  • Check for noise while it's running
  • The dryer is making warm air
  • On condenser and heat pump dryers, the water pump is working

Good to know about testing

  • A dryer has to be tested with a real load in it — an empty drum turns when a worn one under load won't.
  • Testing only finds what isn't working at the time, so intermittent faults are the hardest to catch.
  • Anything extra we find along the way gets shown to you and repaired within the same labour cap.

Four things that help before we arrive

  • Empty the dryer and have a damp towel or two handy — we need something to test it with.
  • Leave it plugged in and connected. A dryer can only be diagnosed while it runs.
  • Clear the space around and in front of it, and tell us if it's wall-mounted, stacked or in a cupboard.
  • The model and serial number are usually on a label around the door opening — a photo of it when you book helps us come prepared.

Repair Scope

Things That Can Affect a Dryer Repair

Two things are worth knowing before you book: what we repair inside the dryer, and how yours is installed. Access comes up on dryers more than on any other appliance.

We repair this

Heating, drive, control and airflow faults

  • Heating elements, thermostats and thermal cut-outs
  • Capacitors and thermal overload devices — the two parts we replace most often on dryers
  • Motors, belts and the parts that drive the drum
  • Door switches, catches and latches
  • Timers, control boards, sensors and program faults
  • Fans and blowers, and airflow restrictions inside the appliance
  • Condensate pumps, reservoirs and drain hoses on condenser and heat pump dryers

Vented, condenser or heat pump — that's nearly everything that fails on a dryer, and it's repaired in your laundry.

A refrigeration specialist repairs this

The sealed circuit in a heat pump dryer

  • Refrigerant leaks and re-gassing
  • Compressor faults and replacement
  • Repairs to the sealed pipework

A heat pump dryer has the same kind of sealed refrigeration circuit as a fridge. That work needs flame brazing on a workshop bench, so we don't undertake it.

It's uncommon, and it only applies to heat pump models. Everything else on the appliance is still ours — and if it is the sealed circuit, we'll tell you.

Worth sorting before we arrive

How your dryer is installed

Dryers end up in the tightest spots in the house. None of it stops the repair — it changes what the visit needs, which is much better known in advance than discovered on the day.

  • Wall-mounted. For health and safety reasons, taking a dryer down needs at least two able-bodied people. If nobody on site can assist, a second technician may be needed, charged as labour at the standard rate.
  • Stacked above the washing machine. Same two-person rule if it has to come off a stacking kit or bracket to be worked on.
  • Built into cabinetry or a cupboard. Kick panels, doors or shelving that stop the dryer coming out have to be dismantled before we can service it.

Tell us how yours is installed when you book — a photo in the booking notes is ideal — and we'll bring the right people and gear.

Airflow, lint and the difference it makes

  • Keep the lint filter clean between loads. Manufacturers expect it, and our repair warranty is conditional on user-level maintenance being kept up, as set out in our Terms & Conditions of Service.
  • Restricted airflow makes a healthy dryer look broken. Long cycles, damp clothes, cabinet running hot. One of the first things we check.
  • We repair the appliance, not the ducting. If the cause is the installation — a blocked or badly-run vent duct, or a laundry with nowhere for the moist air to go — we'll tell you what we found and what would fix it.

Practical Repair Advice

Repair or Replace Your Dryer?

With dryers, the type matters as much as the age. A heat pump or condenser dryer is an expensive appliance, and the faults that stop it are usually worth fixing. A basic vented dryer costs much less to replace, so the price of the part carries more weight. Capped labour means the repair bill can't run away from you either way.

Repair usually makes sense when

  • It's a heat pump or condenser dryer that's otherwise sound
  • The fault is heating, controls, a switch, a sensor or the drum drive
  • The failed part is available and reasonably priced
  • The cabinet and drum are in good condition, without rust
  • It's wall-mounted and the bracket suits the current model

Replacement may be the better call when

  • Parts are no longer available for the model
  • The part cost approaches the value of an older vented dryer
  • The sealed circuit in a heat pump dryer has failed
  • There's significant rust in the cabinet or drum
  • Several unrelated faults have appeared in a short time

We'll give you the honest answer once the dryer has been diagnosed, not before. If replacement is the better option we can refer you to a trusted local retailer who, where available, can pass on the commercial pricing normally offered to GBRS. You buy directly from the retailer, with no obligation to proceed. We can also do the changeover itself — including taking the old dryer off the wall and putting the new one up, which needs two technicians.

One thing worth knowing: if we've recommended replacement but can still get the dryer working, that particular repair isn't covered by our repair warranty. We'll always tell you when that's the situation before doing the work.

Before You Book

Dryer Repair Questions

We work across Canberra and surrounds from our base in Fyshwick. Homes within about a 30-minute drive have no travel fee. Between 30 and 60 minutes, travel is charged at the labour rate in 5-minute blocks after the first 30 minutes and doesn't count towards the labour cap. We generally don't service locations more than 60 minutes from Fyshwick. Check the map under Service Area.

The initial visit is the Service Call Fee of $150 plus minimum labour of $100, which covers the first 30 minutes on site. Book online and you save 10% on the Service Call Fee. Labour past the first 30 minutes is $16.67 per 5 minutes, and labour is capped at 2.5 hours per appliance. Parts are charged separately and always quoted before we fit them.

Yes, all three. Vented and condenser dryers are straightforward in-home work. Heat pump dryers we repair too, with one exception: the sealed refrigerant circuit inside them is refrigeration work, the same as the sealed system in a fridge, so that part needs a refrigeration specialist. Everything around it, including the controls, fans, drum drive, sensors and the condensate pump, is our work.

A dryer that turns but doesn't dry is usually either not making heat or not moving enough air. Heating faults, sensor and thermostat faults, blower problems and restricted airflow all look identical from the outside, which is what the diagnostic visit sorts out. Sometimes the cause turns out to be the installation rather than the appliance, and we'll tell you plainly if that's what we find.

Yes. Heating elements, thermostats and thermal cut-outs are among the most common dryer repairs we do, along with capacitors and thermal overload devices. Many are finished on the first visit. If the part has to be ordered we book a return visit to fit it, with no second Service Call Fee.

That's common in Canberra laundries and it doesn't stop us. For health and safety reasons a dryer has to be taken down by at least two able-bodied people, so if nobody on site can assist, a second technician may be needed and their time is charged as labour at the standard rate. Tell us how yours is installed when you book so we can plan for it rather than discover it on the day.

Often we finish on the first visit. Thermal cut-outs, capacitors, switches, door catches and airflow problems are all commonly sorted on the spot. If a part has to be ordered, we book a return visit to fit it. There's no second Service Call Fee on a return visit, only minimum labour of $100. If you already know exactly which part your dryer needs, tell us when you book and we can order it ahead of the appointment.

It depends more on what has failed than on the age of the dryer, and we'll give you the honest answer once it's diagnosed rather than before. Heat pump and condenser dryers are expensive to replace, so repairing one is usually well worth it. A basic vented dryer is cheaper to replace, so the part cost matters more. If replacement is the better option we can refer you to a trusted local retailer who, where available, can pass on the commercial pricing normally offered to GBRS. You buy directly from the retailer, with no obligation. See Appliance Replacement.

Almost all of them. We're authorised service agents for Fisher & Paykel, Haier, Hisense, esatto, Solt and Inalto. We also work through national repair and warranty companies on brands including LG, Bosch, Westinghouse, Euromaid, Bellini, Stirling, Akai and Hoover, and we service dryers from brands including Samsung, Miele, Speed Queen, Smeg and Kelvinator. If your brand isn't listed we can usually still help, as long as parts are available.

Completed repairs carry a 12-month warranty on the parts and labour for that repair. The warranty starts from the date of the final invoice and is in effect once that invoice has been paid. There's also limited cover for new faults that appear soon after: within 2 weeks we repair them for the cost of parts and labour within the remaining labour cap, and between 2 and 4 weeks the labour cap resets with no new Service Call Fee. Full conditions are in our Terms & Conditions of Service.

The quickest way to find out is to make an online booking, which shows live availability. When we have a gap we can sometimes attend within a couple of hours of booking. Jobs with extra requirements, such as travel outside our normal range, are scheduled by our admin team. More general questions are answered in our FAQ.
