Washing Machine Problems We Can Help With

Find the one that sounds like your machine. You don't need to know the cause — describing what it is doing is enough for us to bring the right parts and tools.

Won't drain

Water sits in the drum at the end of the cycle, or the machine stops with the drum full.

Won't spin

Clothes come out soaking wet, or the spin cycle never gets up to speed.

Leaking water

Water on the laundry floor, under the machine, or running down the door.

Won't fill

No water enters the drum, it fills very slowly, or detergent isn't being taken up.

Loud or banging

Grinding, knocking or a machine that walks across the floor when it spins.

Door or lid stuck

The door won't unlock after a cycle, or the machine won't start because it thinks the door is open.

Error code showing

A code or flashing light on the display. Tell us the code when you book — it helps us prepare.

Stops mid-cycle

The cycle stalls or never finishes, or the machine runs for hours without progressing.

Dead or won't start

No lights, no response to the buttons, or it trips the power when you switch it on.

Drum not turning

Clothes sit in water without moving, or the drum turns freely but never washes properly.

No hot wash

Warm and hot cycles come out cold on machines that heat their own water.

Something else

Odd smells, marks on clothing or behaviour you can't explain. Describe it and we'll take a look.

Not sure which one fits? Book the visit anyway — diagnosing the fault is what the first appointment is for.

How It Works

What Happens at the Visit

1

Book a time

Choose a slot online and save 10% on the Service Call Fee. Tell us the make, model and what the machine is doing.

2

Know when we're coming

Confirmation email, a reminder the day before, a text when we're one job away, then live tracking on the way.

3

Diagnose the fault

The technician tests the machine, identifies what has failed and explains the cost before any repair work starts.

4

Repair or order parts

Many faults are finished on the spot. If a part is needed we order it and book a return visit — no second Service Call Fee.

5

Test and follow up

We run our washing machine checks before closing the job, then follow up two weeks later to confirm all is well.

What we check before we call it finished

  • General check for leaks, pooling water or corrosion
  • Filter and drain port clear of debris
  • The machine drains
  • The machine fills with water
  • The machine heats water, where applicable
  • The machine agitates
  • The machine spins

A washing machine cycle can run for well over two hours, so we use an accelerated functional test rather than sitting through a full cycle. Testing can only find what isn't working at the time, and while the original fault is present some stages can't be tested until it's repaired. If we find additional problems along the way, we'll show you and repair them within the same labour cap.

Repair Scope

What We Can Repair — and What Needs a Workshop Bench

Nearly every washing machine fault is repaired in your laundry. There's one job that belongs on a workshop bench instead, and it's worth knowing which before you book.

We repair this

Pump, valve, lock, hose and control faults

  • Blocked drains, filters and drain hoses
  • Drain pumps and pump faults
  • Inlet valves and hoses on a machine that won't fill
  • Door locks, lids and switches
  • Timers, control boards and program faults
  • Leaks from hoses, fittings and connections

This is nearly everything that fails on a washing machine, front loader or top loader, and it's repaired in your laundry.

Needs a workshop bench

Bearings, inner drum and tub removal

  • Bearing replacement
  • Inner drum removal
  • Outer tub removal

Reaching these means stripping the machine back to its shell, so it's bench work rather than in-home work. It's also the one repair where the cause — corrosion, sand or foreign objects — often means the repair won't last, so on a machine that old, replacing it is usually the better value. We can help with that too.

Not sure what's wrong? That's normal — book the visit as usual. Everything else on a washing machine we handle in your home. And in the rare case it does turn out to be bearings or a drum, we charge the Service Call Fee only with no labour on top, and you'll still know exactly what's wrong and what your options are.

Practical Repair Advice

Repair or Replace Your Washing Machine?

Most washing machine faults are worth checking before you replace the machine. Pumps, valves, door locks, hoses, drain blockages and control faults are usually repairable for far less than the cost of a new machine — and capped labour means the repair bill can't run away from you.

Repair usually makes sense when

  • The machine is otherwise in good condition
  • The failed part is available and reasonably priced
  • The fault is in the pump, valves, hoses, door lock, filter or controls
  • You're happy with how the machine washes

Replacement may be the better call when

  • The bearings, drum or tub have failed
  • Parts are no longer available for the model
  • The part cost approaches the value of the machine
  • There's existing rust, water damage or multiple unrelated faults

We'll give you the honest answer once the machine has been diagnosed, not before. If replacement is the better option we can refer you to a trusted local retailer who, where available, can pass on the commercial pricing normally offered to GBRS. You buy directly from the retailer, with no obligation to proceed.

One thing worth knowing: if we've recommended replacement but can still get the machine working, that particular repair isn't covered by our repair warranty. We'll always tell you when that's the situation before doing the work.

Before You Book

Washing Machine Repair Questions

We work across Canberra and surrounds from our base in Fyshwick. Homes within about a 30-minute drive have no travel fee. Between 30 and 60 minutes, travel is charged at the labour rate in 5-minute blocks after the first 30 minutes and doesn't count towards the labour cap. We generally don't service locations more than 60 minutes from Fyshwick. Check the map under Service Area.

The initial visit is the Service Call Fee of $150 plus minimum labour of $100, which covers the first 30 minutes on site. Book online and you save 10% on the Service Call Fee. Labour past the first 30 minutes is $16.67 per 5 minutes, and labour is capped at 2.5 hours per appliance. Parts are charged separately and always quoted before we fit them.

Often we can finish on the first visit — blocked drains, filter and hose problems and some pump or switch faults are all commonly sorted on the spot. If a part has to be ordered, we book a return visit to fit it. There's no second Service Call Fee on a return visit, only minimum labour of $100. If you already know exactly which part your machine needs, tell us when you book and we can order it ahead of the appointment.

No. Reaching the bearings means stripping the machine back to its shell, which is a workshop bench job, and our Fyshwick workshop is set up for small portable appliances rather than full-size machines. If the diagnosis shows your machine needs one of these repairs, we charge the Service Call Fee only and don't add labour charges.

Usually, yes — but we'll give you the honest answer once it's diagnosed rather than before. We can explain what has failed, what the part costs and whether repair still makes sense for the age and condition of the machine. If replacement is the better option we can refer you to a trusted local retailer who, where available, can pass on the commercial pricing normally offered to GBRS. You buy directly from the retailer, with no obligation. See Appliance Replacement.

Almost all of them. We're authorised service agents for Fisher & Paykel, Haier, Hisense, esatto, Solt and Inalto. We also work through national repair and warranty companies on brands including LG, Bosch, Westinghouse, Euromaid, Bellini, Stirling, Akai and Hoover, and we service machines from brands including Samsung, Miele, Speed Queen, Smeg, Panasonic and Kelvinator. If your brand isn't listed we can usually still help, as long as parts are available.

Completed repairs carry a 12-month warranty on the parts and labour for that repair. The warranty starts from the date of the final invoice and is in effect once that invoice has been paid. There's also limited cover for new faults that appear soon after: within 2 weeks we repair them for the cost of parts and labour within the remaining labour cap, and between 2 and 4 weeks the labour cap resets with no new Service Call Fee. Full conditions are in our Terms & Conditions of Service.

Our goal is to finish within 1.5 hours of labour, and labour is capped at 2.5 hours per appliance no matter how long the work actually takes. Washing machine cycles can run for over two hours, so we use an accelerated functional test rather than sitting through a full cycle.

We check for leaks, pooling water and corrosion, check the filter and drain port are clear of debris, and confirm the machine drains, fills with water, heats water where applicable, agitates and spins. Testing can only find what isn't working at the time, and while the original fault is present some stages can't be tested until it's repaired.

The quickest way to find out is to make an online booking, which shows live availability. When we have a gap we can sometimes attend within a couple of hours of booking. Jobs with extra requirements, such as travel outside our normal range, are scheduled by our admin team. More general questions are answered in our FAQ.
