Workshop Repairs

What We Repair In The Workshop

We accept portable household electrical appliances that can be safely carried into the workshop, up to about the size of an Engel or portable fridge. That covers most small appliance repairs in Canberra, including microwave repairs, robot vacuum repairs and portable fridge repairs.

Microwaves

Common causes include door switches, turntables and heating faults.

Robot Vacuum Cleaners

Bring the charging dock, power supply and accessories.

Vacuum Cleaners

Conventional upright, barrel and stick vacuums.

Air Fryers

Heating, timer and control faults.

Benchtop Ovens & Cookers

Benchtop ovens, slow cookers and similar appliances.

Mixers & Food Processors

Motor, switch and attachment faults.

Portable & Camping Fridges

Engel-style and camping fridges that aren't cooling properly.

Fans & Portable Heaters

Portable fans and portable heaters.

Have something similar not listed here? Get in touch and we'll let you know if it's a good fit for the workshop.

Repair Scope

What the Workshop Takes — and What It Doesn't

The dividing line is simple: if you can carry it in, it's probably a workshop job. If it's plumbed in, wired in or too big to lift, it's an in-home repair instead.

We take this

Portable appliances you can carry in

  • Anything up to about the size of an Engel or portable fridge
  • Plug-in appliances that run on standard household power
  • Appliances complete with the accessories needed to test them
  • Appliances that are reasonably clean and safe to handle

Bring it to the counter during drop-off hours and we'll take it from there.

This needs a different service

Too big, built in, or outside our scope

  • Coffee and espresso machines of any kind
  • Full-size fridges, washing machines, dryers and dishwashers
  • Full-size ovens and cooktops, and installed appliances
  • Gas or fuel-burning appliances
  • Specialist electronics or battery-cell repairs
  • Unsafe, contaminated, pest-affected or excessively dirty appliances

Most of these we still repair — just in your home rather than on the bench. Coffee machines are the one thing we don't take either way.

Full-Size Appliances

Need a Washing Machine, Dishwasher, Oven or Fridge Repaired at Home?

Full-size and installed appliances are outside the workshop's scope, but not outside ours. A technician comes to you instead — washing machines, dryers, dishwashers, fridges and freezers, ovens, cooktops and stoves and rangehoods. If an appliance turns out to be beyond repair, we can also handle the replacement.

Three straightforward pricing pathways, all listed upfront — a plug replacement, a diagnostic or direct repair, and any further repairs found along the way.

Standard Plug Replacement

$66

  • Standard replacement plug
  • Fitting
  • Basic electrical safety testing (Test & Tag)
  • Damage beyond the plug may need a full diagnostic assessment

Diagnostic or Direct Repair

$100 online

$110 standard price

Covers the first 30 minutes on the bench — diagnosing the fault, or completing a straightforward repair when possible.

Parts are additional. If further work is needed, we'll provide a quote before continuing.

The fee covers the technician's time and applies even if the appliance cannot be repaired or the fault cannot be reproduced.

Further Repairs

  • Register online before you arrive to save $10 — or arrive without registering and staff will create the job at the counter.
  • Payment is taken when you hand your appliance to staff.
  • Every appliance must be physically handed to a staff member.
  • Appliances aren't accepted until the job has been confirmed and the applicable payment received.

Please don't leave appliances outside the workshop. Anything left unattended hasn't been registered or accepted for repair — it won't be monitored or protected, and may be exposed to weather, theft or removal by passing scrap collectors. GBRS can't accept responsibility for unattended items. This is separate from our policy for appliances we've already accepted that aren't collected — see our FAQ for that.

Before You Arrive

Getting Your Appliance Ready

  • Empty the appliance of food, water, waste and personal items
  • Make sure it's reasonably clean
  • Bring any accessories needed to reproduce or test the fault
  • Bring power supplies, chargers, docks or removable components — especially for robot vacuums

We may need to decline appliances that are unsafe, contaminated, pest-affected, excessively heavy or otherwise unsuitable for workshop handling.

After The Repair

Warranty & Turnaround

Turnaround Time

We don't promise a fixed turnaround — it depends on the current workshop queue, the type of fault, parts availability and whether further approval is needed. We'll contact you when there's an assessment or repair decision, if approval or further payment is required, if there's a significant parts issue, or when your appliance is ready to collect.

3-Month Workshop Warranty

Workshop repairs include a three-month warranty covering the repair performed and parts we supply. It doesn't cover unrelated or later faults, misuse or accidental damage, contamination or infestation, normal wear and consumables, or customer-supplied parts. This warranty is in addition to, and doesn't limit, your rights under the Australian Consumer Law.

Who's On the Bench

Local Technicians You Can Trust

You're handing an appliance over and walking away, so it's worth knowing who has it. GBRS has been repairing appliances for Canberra since 2015, and the workshop is our own bench in Fyshwick — nothing is sent away to a third party.

Qualified, and kept current

Between our technicians we have degree-qualified engineers, electronics specialists, electricians and multiple Cert IV qualifications. Small appliances are electrical work on a bench, which is exactly what that background is for.

Before You Come In

Workshop Repair Questions

No. Drop off and collection are 8:00am to 9:00am, Monday to Friday, with no appointment required. Registering online beforehand saves you $10 and speeds up the counter, but you can still arrive without registering and staff will create the job on the spot.

No, we don't repair coffee or espresso machines of any kind. We also can't take full-size fridges, washing machines, dryers, dishwashers, full-size ovens and cooktops, installed appliances, or gas and fuel-burning appliances — our in-home repair service covers most of these instead.

The first 30 minutes of inspection, testing and diagnosis. If a straightforward repair can be completed during that same bench session, there's no extra labour charge — parts are additional. The diagnostic payment covers the technician's time and is payable even if the appliance can't be repaired, parts aren't available, repair isn't economical, or the fault can't be reproduced.

The diagnostic charge still applies, since it covers the technician's time in assessing the fault. We'll let you know what we found and your options.

Payment is taken when you hand your appliance to staff at drop-off. For direct repairs, the full quote is prepaid before parts are ordered or work begins. Online registration doesn't require online prepayment.

We don't promise a fixed turnaround, as it depends on the current workshop queue, the type of fault, parts availability and whether further approval is needed. We'll contact you when there's a decision to make or when your appliance is ready to collect.

Bring the charging dock, power supply and any accessories needed to reproduce the fault, along with the robot vacuum itself.
